Pearl Seminar 2002 Go-Give Award Winner

What an honor it was to have been recognized as the annual Pearl Go-Give Award Winner at Seminar 2002. I have always enjoyed interacting with people that God has put into my life and believe it is important to help others see their gifts. It is imperative that we make giving a way of life! Prior to beginning my Mary Kay business, I was extremely limited as to whom I could reach out to. In Mary Kay watching my mentor, Pamela Waldrop Shaw, work with her unit and adoptees was exciting to me. I heard Mary Kay say "that the adoptee system is one of our most precious possessions, and I hope that each of our Sales Directors will always regard it and cherish it, knowing that its very existence is the foundation of our Company".

In Mary Kay you have to know what HEART is. The heart is the pulsating center that supplies the life force. In our Company this force is the go-give spirit, the willingness to help one another.  We are not just selling cosmetics, we are touching lives. I hope you will practice the Golden Rule and make the go-give spirit an important part of your businesses. The best formula for success I know is to subtract hate, divide by kindness, multiply with love and add God. (Applause April 1990, From the Heart)

I believe that each of us as leaders need to continue Mary Kay's desire of passing on the go-give spirit. With all my heart I believe the one quality, which sets Mary Kay apart from other companies, is our commitment to the go-give spirit. The very foundation of this Company is based on the premise of helping others. By applying the go-give principles, you have the opportunity to enrich the lives of others on a daily basis. All you have to do to be successful is remember that if you help enough people get what they want, you will get what you want. Mary Kay Ash always shared stories about living her life with her priorities in order - faith, family and career. Now we have Richard Rogers to share with us indeed, that is exactly how Mary Kay lived!

When we treat others with kindness expecting nothing in return, we are living our lives with Godly principles. It is for this reason I am inspired to keep Mary Kay's dream of go-give alive! Without the go-give philosophy we would not be able to grow all over the world. For 40 successful years, Mary Kay has grown abundantly. The go-give system has allowed us to do this and it is incredible!

The go-give philosophy benefits everyone involved. We must always remember that what we sow, we will reap! Therefore, we must always give of ourselves. When you teach and involve your adoptees equally as your own, you have a tremendous sense of family, accomplishment and pride. Many times it was my adoptees who were moving and shaking. They kept me going during seasons of my career where things weren't moving and shaking! Thanks to their excitement, passion and commitment they moved my unit!

I feel it is our responsibility to teach our out-of-town Beauty Consultants via the telephone, conference calls, or e-mail. We cant assume or expect that the local Sales Director will do so. We need to build the relationship and esprit de corps with our unit members. This also eliminates confusion on the Consultant's end. She has the best of both worlds; she has a great relationship with her Sales Director and receives weekly instruction and inspiration from her local adoptive Sales Director! When we make sure to fulfill our responsibilities, it will be easier for the adoptive Sales Director.  We need to teach our out-of-town Consultants to:

  1. Track their prizes (keep it on a sales ticket, every month she gives it to her adoptive Sales Director to be totaled, then the Sales Director mails it to the Consultant's commissioned Sales Director. This eliminates extra work for the adoptive Sales Director).

  2. To come early with a positive attitude!

  3. To stay late and help take down!

  4. To always have the attitude of "what can I bring to the meeting"; instead of "what am I going to get out of the meeting"!

If we do not teach our Consultants this they do not know to do it! Adoptees are a blessing! We need to make sure we equip them so they feel included and provide a place for them to win!

Mary Kay shared a lesson about going the extra mile and it goes like this: The difference between average and top people can be explained in three words: and then some. The top people do what is expected of them, and then some. They are thoughtful of others; they are considerate and kind - and then some. They meet their responsibilities and their obligations fairly and squarely - and then some. They are good friends to their friends, and they can be counted on in an emergency - and then some. (Management Conference 1985 speech)

We need to always remember to do the "and then some" in every situation!
