Making Changes that Make the Difference by Pamela Waldrop Shaw, NSD Recently I got an email that had been shared by Lynda Jackson, NSD and 'Terrie' . Because I had used a good bit of Dr. PHIL's material at Leadership 2003 with the Shaw Directors as we explored what it takes to move from good to GREAT, I took this email and adapted it with some material from my personal study and experience. I love some of the 'duh' statements Dr. Phil makes. One of the most impressionable ones for me personally is: You can't change what you don't acknowledge These are some of the questions and advice that Dr. Phil teaches.
You must acknowledge that you are getting some kind of payoff for living with what you don't want -- [and I might define that as pity or sympathy from someone, a perpetual excuse that you buy into, perhaps manipulation to get a spouse to carry more weight or work harder or make changes so that you don't have to and so that you get to do less...] and you must be willing honestly to acknowledge and label whatever personal characteristics are keeping you from success. [ and I might suggest some options---laziness, lack of discipline, lack of organization, lack of accountability, lack of humility to take instruction, bitterness or resentment, blame, jealousy...] Consider how refreshing it would be to wake up tomorrow and honestly be able to say, "For the first time in my life, I am not lying to myself. For the first time in my life, I am facing the honest truth." [ "I don't have time to exercise" has been changed to " My priorities are that I make time to stay fit, and I can really DESIGN MY LIFE." "I don't know what to do in a quiet time" has been changed to " I bought or signed up for a highly recommended Bible study instead of waiting for it to come to me" " I don' t know enough people and I'm not good at networking" has been changed to "I will pass my card out to 5 people a day for 7 straight days to begin a habit that I don't yet own" " I NEED to get new people but am so busy..." has been changed to " I choose to let other tasks go to FIND new people as a priority." " I can't find or keep delegated help" has been changed to " I am choosing to get more accountable and reliable and will find delegated help today and I know that my excuses of 'no $ and no quality help' will fade when I do my part."]
Dr. Phil also talks about being in a rut! [ What is your rut? Wake time? Procrastinating exercise? Bad or no breakfast, fast lunch? High sugar and carb snacks or drinks? Busy-work? Email all day? Talking on the phone? A pitiful partner? Reorders--Delivering product to existing customers? Your RUT is keeping you from your NEXT PROMOTION! ]
